Functioning, But Not Feeling Like Yourself

October is World Menopause Month, and we want to start with a feeling so many women describe but rarely say out loud. You're functioning. The work gets done, the school run happens, dinner is on the table. But somewhere along the way you stopped feeling like yourself, and you can't quite put your finger on when.
It's a hard thing to explain because nothing looks wrong from the outside. There's no single symptom to point at. It's more of a background hum: a little flatter, a little shorter-fused, a little less sure of yourself than you used to be.
Why it's so easy to dismiss
Most of us have a ready explanation for feeling off. We're busy. We're tired. It's been a tough year. Those things are often true, which is exactly why the pattern underneath can go unnoticed for months, sometimes years.
Perimenopause often begins in your early to mid forties, and for some women earlier. Emerging research suggests the hormonal shifts of this stage can affect mood, confidence and emotional resilience, not just the physical symptoms most people have heard of. Yet it's rarely the first explanation anyone reaches for, including the women going through it.
What "not myself" can look like
It shows up differently for everyone, but women often tell us about things like:
- Feeling flat or low without an obvious reason
- Losing patience faster than they used to, then feeling guilty about it
- Doubting decisions they would once have made without a second thought
- Feeling anxious in situations that never used to bother them
- Pulling back from plans because it all feels like too much effort
None of these on their own means you're in perimenopause. But if several feel familiar, it's worth looking at the bigger picture rather than treating each one as a separate problem.
You're not imagining it
One of the most common things we hear is relief. Relief that there might be a reason, and that it isn't a personal failing or a sign you've lost your edge. Understanding what might be driving the change is often the first step towards feeling more like you again.
Where to start
You don't need to have it all figured out. A good starting point is simply getting a clearer view of what's going on across your whole wellbeing, not just the one thing that bothers you most.
The free Wellness Assessment looks at your wellbeing across hundreds of dimensions and gives you a picture built around you, with one realistic place to begin. It's in the NOW For Women app, now available to download on Google Play. On iPhone? The App Store version is coming soon.
If what you're feeling is severe or persistent, or you're struggling to cope, please speak to your GP. They're there to help, and it's a conversation well worth having.
